How do carbon credits work?
Carbon credits make it possible to assign an economic value to the forest’s ability to store carbon dioxide. By adapting forest management practices and allowing trees to grow longer, forest owners can capture more carbon and get paid for the climate benefits their forests provide. EKEN develops certified carbon credit projects that create a new source of income for forest owners while helping companies reach their climate goals through verified and transparent climate actions. Learn more about how carbon credits work and how you can be part of the solution!

This is how carbon credits work

Forest owners
-
Leases their forest land to EKEN for carbon credit projects.
-
Receives payment in the form of lease income and future revenues from carbon credits.

Project development
-
EKEN develops carbon credit projects according to the VM0045 methodology.
-
Works with long-term agreements (15–35 years) where forest owners receive financial incentives to extend rotation periods.
-
Uses AI, remote sensing, and satellite data to identify forests with high carbon storage potential.

Validation and
Verification Bodies
-
Independent auditors ensure that EKEN’s projects comply with Verra’s international methodology.
-
Validation: An accredited third-party entity reviews the project to ensure it complies with the standard and methodology.
-
Verification: A separate third-party auditor verifies, among other things, that EKEN carries out measurement and monitoring as described, and that EKEN has correctly calculated the climate impact according to the methodology. They also conduct site visits and sample plots to check the measurement of the trees.
-
In EKEN’s case, verification takes place every three to eight years.

Certification and
Registration
-
After verification, Verra approves the reported carbon storage and certifies the project’s carbon credits.
-
The certified carbon credits are registered in Verra’s electronic registry and can then be sold.

Corporate clients
-
Companies with climate strategies purchase EKEN's verified carbon credits to offset emissions they cannot eliminate through their own measures.
-
Customers invest either directly through EKEN or via EKEN’s international reseller, Anew Climate.
